The literary word is druzhyna, and its pronunciation is not as scary as its look. You should pronounce it somewhere along these lines: droo-jee-nah (‘droo’ like in food). The stress falls on the second part of the word, the jee part. First, practice saying the word dragee a couple of times, and then you can transition to druzhyna, the sweet denomination of wife in Ukrainian.

Yes, zhynka is also an equivalent of the word ‘female,’ so when gender should be mentioned in the documents, this word is usually used.

Now the bonus word, and you’ll probably want to use it regularly when dating Ukrainian woman: kokhana (ko-hah-nah, the stress falls in the middle). It means the loved one, the sweetheart (in the female genus, as there is a male variant as well). When you learn to pronounce it confidently, it will sound like a warm breath, a whisper, or a gentle wind caressing the leaves. The Ukrainian language is very melodic and romantic, so many a word will sound pleasant and soft.
